A History of Rutherford County
Title: Carlton C. Sims, editor, A History of Rutherford County P 131 (:, 1947)
" The next earliest record of a physician locating in Rutherford County was that of Dr. Swepson Sims. Dr. Sims located near the communities of Salem and Barfield in 1822. He was born in Granville County, North Carolina, on May 16, 1775. After marrying Jane Meriweather Lewis he moved to Tennessee. Apparently he was very active in religious work. On the organization of the Salem Methodist Church in 1812 he was appointed one of the trustees of that church. He carried a very active practice in the rural sections of Rutherford County for many years. Since he studied medicine in Philadelphia, it is presumed that he attended the University of Pennsylvania. He died on September 22, 1850, and was buried in a cemetery near the village of Salem."

Road)
