Pleasant Hill Cemetery & Pleasant Hill Baptist Church

Location: T-46-N; R-18-W; Section 25 - SE 1/4 of Section; near Pilot Grove, Mo. "A plot of land was deeded to a party, or parties; interested in establishing a burial ground, in the year 1852; seven or eight miles southwest of Boonville, Mo. The Pleasant Hill Baptist Church was also at this location. Many of the stones in this cemetery are unreadable; as the ravages of time and the elements have left them as they are. Many of the graves were marked only by ordinary stones, or as generally referred to, as fieldstones, some of which are still there; but not identifying the persons buried there. The following is a list of the stones, and graves, some marked and some not marked, the best that we have been able to list." Recorded by Mr. Tom Bryan and Mr. Charles Warnhoff. When the Pleasant Hill Church was disbanded, Mr. Tom Bryan was appointed to dispose of the property and also to give letters of membership to those who wished to join other congregations - some went to Mt. Herman and some to the Pilot Grove Churches. The church building was sold to the Lotspiech brothers and is still standing on the former church-yard which adjoins the cemetery. The building has been sided with tin and is used as a grainery. The cemetery is well cared for by a cemetery association.

Old Lamine Cemetery- There is no record of the origin of Old Lamine Cemetery; all that we know is: There is about an acre in the southeast corner that is filled with unmarked graves. The only marked graves in that corner are those of the Cramer Family and they have a family tradition that in the beginning it was Cramer Land that was donated for cemetery purposes. The remainder of the cemetery was donated in small plots of 1/2 to 1 acre. The first plots were donated by Mr. Thomas Mellar of Lamine Township in the 1870 decade. Later a plot was donated by Eddie and Billie Sims in 1906. All three of these plots were deeded to the Elders of Old Lamine Christian Church. There was a small Baptist Cemetery located in what is now the south-central part of the cemetery and which was added to by the moving of the Baptist Church to Blackwater. The part from the Baptist Church is about an acre in size. During the 1940's, the Old Lamine School was closed and became a part of the Blackwater School District. The Blackwater District donated the school yard to the cemetery. A new plot of three-fourth acre has just been purchased by the cemetery from Mr. and Mrs. Winkler. So much for the physical part of the cemetery; now as to organization and care of the cemetery: Previous to 1910, the cemetery was un-cared for and grew up in weeds and brush except for families caring for their own lots. During that year, the Ladies Old Lamine Cemetery Association was formed. The men met and cleared up the cemetery. It was sowed in bluegrass and sugar maples were set out along the driveways. I hesitate to try to name the ladies responsible for the organization - but to name a few families that I know were helpful would have to include: Gibsons; McMahans; Kincheloes; Turleys; Harrises; Sites; Wings; and others of the Old Pioneer families of the community. The ladies kept the cemetery in perfect condition for more than sixty years - financing it by donations - an annual bazaar and dinner, and ice-cream socials. However, as the community changed, it became a burden upon a few ladies to stage the annual affairs and another method had to be employed. In 1964, a meeting was called by the Ladies Association to discuss a Perpetual Fund. Mr. Gus Boller spoke at that meeting. Among other things, he said were "Organize tonight or it will be postponed indefinitely". There were men present who had considerable business experience and proposed a corporation resulting in the Old Lamine Cemetery Corporation, where a board of directors undertook to raise an endowment fund for the perpetual care of the cemetery. The raising of the fund and maintenance of the cemetery is now the responsibility of the Old Lamine Cem. Corp. While the fund is not yet large enough to guarantee the future, it is large enough that added to gate collections, it can take care of the cemetery at present. By Mr. D. T. Weekley, Blackwater, Mo. - May, 1981

HISTORICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA of ILLINOIS Edited by Newton Bateman, LL. D. & Paul Selby, A.M and History of St. Clair County, Edited by A. S. Wilderman & A A Wilderman Vol 4, P 841-842  Chicago, Munsell Publishing Company, Publishers 1907

Dr. Giles Norman Jeffries, from Kentucky, made his home for a time at Prairie du Rocher.  From there he moved to St. Louis, where he lived only a short time and then, at the earliest solicitation of Duteil Cabanne and Colonel Don Morrison, came to Belleville.  As Dr. W W Roman had only recently died and his friends were casting about for a successor to his practice, Dr. Jeffries appeared most fortunately on the scene.  Here was his opportunity, and he made good use of it. His welcome and his success were commensurate.  By his urbanity and his gentlemanly conduct,  no less than by his professional skill, he won and held the hearts of the community.  One thing more than all else that came into Dr. Jeffries' life for his good was his marriage to Mrs. Mary West Estes, "one who moved in an atmosphere of refined spirituality."  Dr. Jeffries was truly indebted  in many ways to his good wife, who brought him some of his best patrons.  She bore him three children-one daughter, Mrs. Louisa Osgood, and two sons, Giles Norman Jeffries, Jr., and Edmund Jeffries-all of whom live in Minneapolis, Minn.  Dr. Jeffries died at Belleville, after a brief illness, in 1876.  Born and educated in the sunny Southland, he carried with him all through his life the genial, fragrant comradeship of the born cavalier.  Children ran to meet him; they never saw him frown.  The  widow's heart sent up a prayer, as incense at the mention of his name.  The old couple on the farm, in their rustic simplicity and in their hard-handed honesty, almost welcomed a spell of bilious fever if it brought him under their rooftress.  He brought them all they needed, interpreted  the things in the hurly-burly of the changing world that they did not understand, and,  setting the seal of his approval  on all that they had done for his patient  and giving them all an honest opinion and an efficient remedy, he departed with their benedictions.

P 834- Dr. William W. Roman, who finished his work and died about half a century ago, was a medical giant, whose name and fame are written  large upon  the history of Belleville.  He was not only dictator in the medical world,  but reigned supreme in his social  and political environments.  From "that noble Roman" as he has been called,  keen students learned many valuable lessons.  Dr. Perryman was one of his students.  In a sense, Dr. Jeffries was his successor.
