God, Amen, I Jane Young, of Meck. Co., Virginia, being low in health, but of
sound memory, do make this my last Will and Testament, in manner
following:
My Will and desire is that all my just debts and funeral expenses should be paid
out of my last year and the ensuing years crops of tobacco, corn, and wheat.
I give to Mary Winkler a sorrel mare After the crop upon the plantation is finished. I give unto James Boyd a black mare after the crop upon the plantation is finished. I give unto Lennard Sims my old riding mare. I give to Alexander Boyd the cart belonging to the plantation and all my stock of hogs. I give to my sister Lucy Swepson a bay mare colt named Rattle. I give to my sister Charity Swepson a bay(Illeg) named Rassel. I give to Lennard Sims and Alexander Boyd all my stock of cattle to be equally divided between them. I give to my brother William Mallory Swepson a negro boy named Zekial., when he comes of age or marries, but in case he dies before that period my Will is that he should go to my sisters Lucy and Charity Swepson. I give to my sister Lucy and Charity Swepson one negro woman Egg, her two children and all her increase, all my other estate both real and personal, likewise the whole of my proportion of my Father's Estate, left me by Will to be equally divided between them when my sister Lucy comes of age or marries but in case either of them should die before that period the whole to go to the survivor and in case of the death of both to go to my brother William Mallory Swepson, and in case of the death of him before he comes of age or marries the whole property before mentioned to go unto the Swepson Family. My Will and desire is that there be no appraisement made of my estate.
I constitute and appoint Lennard Sims of Warren County, No. Carolina & John Davis, Junr. of Mecklenburg County, Virginia, Executors of this my last Will and Testament.

Indenture, made this third day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven
hundred and ninety-six between Thomas Jeffries , Mecklenburg Co, Virginia, of
the one part and Richard Swepson of the same County of the other part,
Witnesseth that the said Thomas Jeffries in and for the consideration of the sum
of five hundred and sixty pounds, fourteen shillings, current money of Virginia,
to being in hand by the said Richard Swepson in receipt whereof the said Thomas
Jeffries doth hereby acknowledge and therefore doth clearly exonerate and
discharge the said Richard Swepson his heirs and assigns forever, hath given,
granted, bargained, sold and confirmed, and by these proceeds grant, bargain,
sell, and confirm unto the said Richard Swepson, his heirs and assigns forever;
one certain tract or parcel of land being and lying in the County of
Mecklenburg, containing by estimation six hundred and twenty five (625) acres,
be the same, more or less. It being all the lands left to me by my father,
John Jeffries ,and joining the lands of Henry Speed, Robert Boyd, and Major John
Nelson; TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the aforesaid granted, bargained, and sold land and
premises with every of its rights and appurtenances thereunto belonging unto the
said Richard Swepson, his heirs and assigns forever, and the said Thomas
Jeffries doth agree for himself his heirs Exors. and Adms. to warrant and
forever defend the aforesaid land and premises with all its rights and
appurtenances unto Richard Swepson, his heirs and assigns forever. against
Thomas Jeffries, his heirs and assigns the claim or claims of any other person

In the name of God the Creator all merciful I, Richard Swepson of Mecklenburg ,being in perfect understanding and seriously reflecting that the time will come when I must go hence and be no (record?) seen do make and ordain this for my last will and testament in the handwriting of Alexander Boyd wishing everything here considered may be taken and
constrewed (sic) according to the common understanding of the words made use of and not leased to the application or misapplication of technical law terms.First, if I should owe any debts at the time of my death, let them be paid up without delay no longer than my executors shall be convinced of the justice of them.
Secondly, my wish and desire is that the money due me from Alexander Boyd shall remain in his hands for the space of two years after my death
Thirdly, I give to my brother Thomas Swepson, one thousand pounds Virginia money
Fourthly, I give to my brother Wm M Swepson, my Negro man slave by the name of Shade, my black riding horse, saddle and bridle, and my chest drawers.
Fifthly, I give to my sister Ann Boyd my black work horse which is on the plantation.
Sixthly, all the rest of my estate I give to my three sisters, Ann Boyd, Elizabeth Clay, and Charity Swepson, to them and their heirs forever to be equally divided amongst them.
Lastly, I nominate Robert Boyd and Alexander Boyd Executors , in Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 5th day of March, 1812

Robert Boyd, one of the executors therein named refused to take upon himself the burthen of the execution thereof, And on the motion of Alexander Boyd, the other Executor therein named who made Oath thereto and together with John W Lewis and Robert Boyd his securities, entered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of twenty thousand dollars, conditioned as the law directs. " He was born in Mecklenburg Co, Va Sept 4, 1760, and he entered the service to the best of his recollection as a substitute but does not remember for whom. The stranger paid him one hundred dollars to serve in his place. He served three months in a Company Commanded by Captain Richard Swepston of Mecklenburg Co, Va , which was part of the Regiment commanded by Col. Mumford. They marched to Portsmouth where they stayed the duration of the three months, their purpose being to keep two British ships of war lying in Hampton Roads from landing. He received a written discharge at the end of the three months from his Captain, Richard Swepston."Nov 28, 1818-Meck. Thomas Carleton was born in King and Queen County on 30 October 1721. Thomas married Sarah Swepson on 31 March 1744. She was born 12 March 1726/7 in Gloucester County. Lunenburg & Mecklenburg County, Virginia were later home for Thomas and Sarah.
Some have speculated that Carleton’s wife was not Sarah Swepson but Sarah Sampson. Yet both Susannah and Gabriel named a child Swepson. Thomas and Sarah were the parents of seven children who grew to adulthood. Six children died in infancy. REF-Carleton Family RecordsChildren: Carleton

Thanks be to the Lord for the same and calling to mind the uncertainty of all earthly things and not knowing how soon I may be called
off the stage of life, do make, ordain, constitute and appoint this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following.
I lend unto my beloved wife Ann Jeffries during her widowhood one third part of my land and plantation and the following Negroes, Lowell, Ned, Alice, Anieu, Nan, and Charles together with the following stock. Third of the choice horse kind, a side saddle and bridles, twenty head
of cattle, thirty head of hogs, all my sheep, three feather beds with their furniture together with all my other household stuff. But in case she marries then my will and desire is that should have during her natural life, three Negroes, to wit, Annica and her increase, Ned and Alice, her choice of horse and saddle, ten head of cattle, twenty head of hogs, two feather beds and their furniture, and at the end of her widowhood or death, the said estate so ------------as above to be sold as my executor here after named shall think fit. And the money thence arriving to be equally divided between my three daughters, Susanna Jeffries, Nancy Jeffries, and Jane Jeffries to them and their heirs forever. My will and desire is that my Negro fellow, Manuel, be sold as soon after my death as my executor shall think fit and the money thence arriving to be equally divided amongst three above mentioned daughters.I give and bequeath to my son, Thomas Jeffries all my land I at present ------- consisting of five hundred and seventy acres be the some more or less, also my two Negroes, to wit, Charles and Sallie, and their increase to him the said Thomas Jeffries, his heirs and assigns forever.
I give and bequeath to my daughter Susanna Jeffries a Negro girl named Gille? And her increase forever to her the said Susanna Jeffries, her heirs and assigns forever. But in case the Negro should decease before my said daughter comes of age or marries that then the said valuation of the said Negro to be made unto her out of the other part of my estate, as my executor
shall think fitI give and bequeath to my daughter Nancy Jeffries one Negro girl named Polly, to her the said Nancy Jeffries her heirs and assigns forever. But in case the said Negro girl should decease before my said daughter comes of age or marries the valuation of the said Negro to be made up to her out of the other part of my estates as my executor shall think fit.
I give and Bequeath to my daughter Jane Jeffries one Negro girl named Annie to her the said Jane Jeffries her heirs and assigns forever. But in case the said Negro should decease before my said daughter comes of age or marries that then the valuation of the said Negro to be made up out of the other part of my Estate, as my executor shall think fit.
My desire is that if my son Thomas Jeffries deceases in his minority, that the said land and Negroes bequeathed to him to be sold, and equally divided among my other children.
Finally I appoint my brother Swepson Jeffries and Seth Moore and my friend Benjamin Whitehead my executors of this my last will and testament.

In the name of God, Amen. I John Jeffries of the County of Mecklenburg being aged and infirm,
but of perfect mind and memory. Thanks be to God. Calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, that is to say, principally and first I commend my soul into the hand of Almighty God who gave it and my body to be committed to the earth and buried decently at the discretion of my executors. Nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God. And as to such worldly estate which it has please Go to bless me with after my funeral expenses and my just debts be fully satisfied and paid, I give as followeth. Viz:
by will and desire that my beloved wife continue her life with my son Richard Jeffries as
long as she lives and in case of his death or any other unforeseen accident that she should lack or have as maintain and my will and desire is that them my three sons here after mentioned have a proportionable part in maintaining her out of their respective parts here after given them. I also give unto my wife the following Negroes (to wit) Jack, Moll, and Frank together with one bed and furniture and one horse called Logan with a saddle during her natural life.Item: I give and bequeath to my son Swepson Jeffries the following Negroes: viz. Waggoner,
Cloe, George, Annica, Dick, Jane, and Marie.Item: I give to my son Achilles the following Negroes: Viz. Tom, Harry, Judy, Isaac, Letty,
and Sarah with her future increase.Item: I give and bequeath to my son Richard Jeffries the tract of land whereon I now live
containing six hundred and thirty acres to be the same more or less to him and his heirs. I also give unto my son Richard the following Negroes: viz. Charles, York?, Same, Dashey, and Frank at my wife's death.My will and desire is that at the death of my wife, Jock, Moll, and Frank. Increase bay be equally divided between my three sons, Swepson, Achilles, and Richard Jeffries.
Item: I also give to my son Richard all my household and kitchen furniture together with sixteen
head of cattle, sixteen head of sheep, one dark bay horse, and all my stock of hogs provided he pays to my grandson Thomas Jeffries Forty shillings and to my granddaughter Jane Jeffries Forty Shillings and one bed and furniture and that he pay the balance due my grandson from me as guardian for which I give him my young sorrel mare and colt.Item: My will and desire is that the residue of my horses, cattle and sheep not before mentioned
to be divided between my two sons Swepson and Achilles. Also that the Negroes may be kept together this year to made a crop and that be applied to the purpose of paying my debts to the moneys due me which is to be collected and apply'd to that purpose and when complied with, the balance to be divided between my wife and three sons, Swepson, Achilles, and Richard Jeffries in proportion to their hands.Lastly I do constitute and appoint my loving wife and my beloved sons Swepson, Achilles and Richard Jeffries executors to this my last will and testament revoking and disannulling all former wills by me or for me made, In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 10 day of January 1788.

In the name of God, Amen, I Achilles Jeffries of Greensville County being sick, and weak of body, but of sound memory, do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament in manner following, Viz:Imprimis - My will and desire is that all my land in Mecklenburg shall be sold to pay my just
debts.Item: I give to my son John Mason Jeffries my Negro boy names Lewis and to him and his heirs and assigns.
Item: I give to my daughter Mason Jeffries my Negro girl named Letty and to her heirs and assigns.
Item: I give to my daughter Sarah Jeffries my Negro girl named Violet and to her and

My will is that at my wives death my land be divided between my two sons John Jeffries and Achilles Jeffries.
I lend unto my son John Jeffries one Negro Boy named Seymore twenty one years if the said Negro should lived as long and then to be free from the claim or claims of any person or persons whosoever or any estate he may afterward acquire. I give unto my son John Jeffries one bed and furniture, also one Black Mare which he ----- away with John Bugg.
Item: I give unto my son Achilles Jeffries one bed and furniture, also one small colt name Flagelator. I also lend unto my son Achilles Jeffries the child that Tiller is now pregnant with twenty five years if it should live and do well and then to be free from the claim or claims of any person or persons whosoever or any estate (let be male or female) he or she may afterwards acquire.
Item: I give to my three sons Howel L. Jeffries, Charles Jeffries, and Richard Jeffries two Negroes Boys, Lot and Lewis, also to each of them a horse, saddle and bridle -- -- of my last named sons one bed and furniture
Item: my will is that after my death my Man Billy be hired out for five years and

Item: I give to my daughter Jain Barnes one mare and eighty dollars and bed and furniture which property she has received. I also lend unto my said daughter Jain Barnes one Negro girl named Fanny for the space of fourteen years and then to be free from the claim or claims of any person or persons whatsoever or any estate she may afterward acquire. I also lend to my daughter Jain Barnes the increase of the said Negro if any until they arrive to twenty five years to be judged by the court and then to be free from the claim or claims of any Person or Persons whatsoever or any estate they may afterward acquire and in case any of the said Negroes should be removed out of this state for the said Negroes to be returned to my estate for the use of my family.
Item: I give unto my daughter Susannah Jeffries one Horse bridle and saddle, one Bed and furniture. Also I lend unto my said daughter one Negro girl Sally with all her increase until they arrive to twenty five years to be judged by the court and then to be free from the claim or claims of any person or persons whatsoever or any Estate they may afterward acquire and in case any of the said Negroes should be removed out of this state the said Negro or Negroes to be returned to my Estate for the use of my family.
Item: My Desire and Will is that after my death that each of my daughters should receive twenty shillings each which is all they are to have out of my Estate together with what I have given in my Will.
