Early Surnames in Standish-Incl Greening

IT IS NOT KNOWN WHERE IN ENGLAND OUR FAMILY CAME FROM-sgs

From MIKE GREENING in England:

"what happened to Daniel Greening who sailed from Bristol in 1676 to be master of a plantation in Virginia?

Or Jabez Greening who was sentenced to be an indentured servant to William Davies in Maryland and sailed on the "Expectation" from Bristol on 11th September 1679 ? I
MY NOTE-See Maryland Records below-sgs

Or James Greening who was sentenced to transportation to the Americas (for stealing) in April 1757?

The above three all came from Gloucestershire."

Yours sincerely - Mike.

The persons brought to Virginia as headrights received no land, only those who paid their own passage. The right to land due by importing headrights could be sold to another person before the patent was issued. Patents were often issued years and even decades after the names of headrights were submitted, and the headright did not necessarily reside on the land described in the patent. Patents were often re-patented to clarify or strengthen the title. An excellent discussion of these points is found in Richard Slatten, "Interpreting Headrights in Colonial Virginia Patents: Uses and Abuses," National Genealogical Society Quarterly 75 (September 1987): 169-179.

MY NOTE-The above JOHN GREENING is most likely the father of MASON GREENING who appears in South Carolina in mid 1760's.  This John Greening was a grandson of Robert Frank who left a will in 1726 Westmoreland County, Va. Mason Greening of South Carolina would be a great gr/son of Robert Frank. So many of the Virginia records have been lost, primarily to courthouse fires, it is literally impossible to prove the lineage. However, Mason Greening of South Carolina had a close relationship with the Knighton family, who were also great gr/children of Robert Frank.-SGS
